The Cheque handover

Three members of Players 4 Players handed over a cheque of R45,000 to The Players Fund’s Chairman, Morne du Plessis, this afternoon. No recipient has been earmarked for the monies yet, but when we find out you will.

Thank you again for all the support!

What transpired on the 19th November 2011

A big thank you to all who attended the 2011 Players 4 Players fundraiser!! Our grand total is currently standing at a whopping R41,090.

R41,090 is great, but we still R8,910 below the target of R50,000… luckily we still have on auction item up for grabs – the signed RWC2011 Springbok Jersey is currently sitting on a R5,500 bid; its worth far more than that.

A very motivating incerpt of an email from Ali at the Players Fund: “Your projected donation of approximately R50 000.00 will be the single largest donation by an associated organization made to the Fund in 2011.”

Come on guys, we can do this!

Update: An email from Ali (Marketing Manager of the Players Fund)

“The Fund’s General Manager, Gail Ross, and I met this morning to discuss the best allocation for the funds raised at your event. On the 8th of August this year, a young rugby player from Kimberley named Aubrey Saal was injured when he entered a scrum late. As a 60kg wing, he was playing out of position at hooker at the time of his injury (another reason why the BokSmart regulations need to be communicated and players educated about their physical abilities). The scrum collapsed and Aubrey was unable to move or respond. He was transferred to Upington Hospital and diagnosed with a C5/C6 incomplete spinal dislocation. He has since had a spinal fusion and regained some movement in his upper body, but he has been classified as a permanent quadriplegic. He was discharged from Upington hospital without a wheelchair, and while he undergoes rehabilitation he has borrowed a chair from a local therapist. Aubrey will be transferred this week to the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre at Lentegeur Hospital in Mitchells Plain for his wheelchair training.

With the proceeds of the bowls event, we will be buying Aubrey his own manual wheelchair, a pressure relieving mattress and cushion, and equipment to allow him to remain independent and return home to his family in Kimberley. We would like you and your team to know that in one afternoon you have changed the lives of Aubrey and his entire family.

All for the Cause

The Goal:

To raise a significant amount for the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund, a fund that assists rugby players who have been the unfortunate victims of catastrophic or serious rugby injuries; and develops and implements initiatives that aim to educate, inform and create awareness around rugby injuries.

Who We Are:

The Shebeen Social Sports Club got the ball rolling with generous donations to the Player’s Fund over the last 3 years. From there the idea to properly market and get the Cape Town rugby community involved on a day to raise funds for players injured in catastrophic rugby injuries was born.

The Shebeen SSC were joined by SARugby.com, NewbieBowls, The Mowbray and brandhouse to form an initiative called the Players4Players foundation.

The Concept:

The idea is simple – if we can get together and raise awareness and a target of R25 000 for the Chris Burger / Petro Jackson fund, we’d be making a significant contribution and giving back to the game we love.

The FIRST Event:

The first event decided upon is a bowls fundraising day with players from the various clubs and schools in the province dressing in their rugby kit and coming down to play.

The day will include a barefoot bowl bowls competition, an auction with a number of fantastic items, a raffle, a braai, and the watching of the Springboks against Ireland on the 6th of November.

We’re asking for you to get together a team of 3 bowlers to come down – in your rugby jerseys or supporters gear – and get involved in a fun day with a serious message.
